6th Annual Friends of Mike Shin Fundraising Dinner
Sunday May 26, 2013

Mark your calendars for Sunday May 26th, 2013. The Sixth Annual Friends of Mike event will take place in just over two months and we are very excited to be able to bring the golf tournament portion back at Bushwood Golf Club. A delicious buffet style dinner catered by Toriichi Catering will follow at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre.

Michael Shin passed away in 2011 from Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD) at the age of 52. FTD represents an estimated 10%-20% of all dementia cases and is recognized as one of the most common dementias affecting a younger population. It is estimated that FTD affects approximately 50,000-60,000 North Americans. While there are currently no treatments to slow or stop the progression of the disease, FTD research is expanding, producing a greater understanding of the disorders.

Mike’s family has been so fortunate to have the support of so many people and this event has also increased awareness of FTD, furthered research opportunities and assisted his family in so many ways. Through the years, his wife June and children Thomas, Jaclyn and Erica have gained so much from the generosity and kindness extended to them and they are so thankful that this event has continued. We hope that many of you will come out for a day of golf and dinner and share memories of Mike.

Please join us on Sunday May 26th for a great day of golf and dinner to support the future needs of Michael’s family and FTD research.

For more information, please call Gordon Shin at 905-502-5660.

As a result of the research donations “Friends of Mike” started, more and more funds are finding their way to FTD research with the hope of an eventual treatment and cure.

Our sincerest gratitude goes to the JCCC for their incredible support, as well as to the numerous sponsors of the event, including the title sponsor, Marty Kobayashi of Dundee Private Investors. There were so many people that helped to make this a memorable and very special day for everyone involved. Thank you to each and every one.

On behalf of Michael, June, Thomas, Jaclyn and Erica, thank you for your tremendous support and friendship.

Michael Shin was a loyal husband, loving father to three wonderful children and dedicated brother. He was family to dozens and good friend to countless others. He had honoured his parents, both before and after their passing by being a devoted and caring son. He would have never wanted his life to be defined by his condition, Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD). The challenges he faced help to highlight how one must appreciate each and every day.

Unfortunately the reality of the disease has placed his family in a difficult situation. They have been tested physically, financially, emotionally and spiritually. It is now the intention of their family and friends to help them on their journey. This web site is a place for people to visit to understand these challenges and to try and help his family's plight. Hopefully we can give them strength by showing his family that they do not walk alone.
